Belize win first-ever Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship in Under-21 3-0 knockout of Guatemala

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize celebrates wildly as Team Belize captured their first-ever Central American volleyball championship, defeating archrivals Guatemala 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18) on home soil on Saturday night. In a high-powered final of the XX U-21 Women’s Central American Volleyball Championship, Team Belize was full of energy from beginning to end at the Belize City Civic Center, finishing the tournament undefeated with a 4-0 record and a perfect 20 points from winning all games 3-0.

Team Belize knew they had clinched the tournament once they won the second set, as the numbers were in their favour. No matter what Guatemala did from then on, the winner’s trophy was staying on home ground. Several times we had been close, particularly two years ago, but our young women had only been able to capture the sub-championship. Now, everything was different. You could feel it from the get-go.

The loss dropped defending champions Guatemala to third place with 2 wins, 2 losses, and 12 points.

Nicaragua, who earlier defeated Honduras 3-0 (25-4, 25-12, 25-20), clinched second place with a 3-1 record and 13 points to their credit.

El Salvador finished fourth with one win, three losses, and five points, while Honduras finished in the cellar with four losses.
