By Horace Palacio: In the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastating impact on the Caribbean and southeast Texas, the Atlantic basin has been relatively quiet. However, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is now monitoring a new area of disturbed weather with a potential for development.
Located over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean, this system is expected to interact with an approaching tropical wave in the coming days. While the chances of development within the next 48 hours remain low, the NHC forecasts a 20 percent chance of formation into a tropical depression or storm within the next week.
Current models predict that the disturbance will approach the Lesser Antilles by early to mid-week, potentially bringing increased rainfall and gusty winds. It is then expected to continue on a west-northwestward track near the Greater Antilles towards the end of the week.
Should this system develop into a tropical storm, it would be named Debby, following the World Meteorological Organization’s naming convention.
The NHC is urging residents in the potential path of this disturbance to stay vigilant and monitor updates from their local meteorological agencies. While the development of this system is not guaranteed, it serves as a reminder that the Atlantic hurricane season is far from over.
