Ministry of Infrastructure Development announces removal of Joe Taylor Bridge in Punta Gorda, advises on temporary crossing guidelines

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure Development & Housing (MIDH) has announced the removal of the steel-structured Joe Taylor Bridge in Punta Gorda in the Toledo District and has also made changes to its previous notice regarding the use of the temporary crossing at the project site.

The MIDH said that while the old bridge structure is removed and a new bridge is constructed, motorists and pedestrians may use temporary crossings provided adjacent to the worksite.

“All heavy vehicles, that is, vehicles with more than two axles or a weight greater than 20,000 pounds and vehicles with tandem trailers, shall use the Carib Reserve Road to access Punta Gorda Town,” the MIDH said in a statement.

“An allowance is made for public buses, which may use the temporary vehicular crossing at their discretion, if the bus’s gross weight is less than 20,000 pounds.”

The MIDH also advised drivers and conductors to ensure, at all times, that buses are not overloaded beyond their occupancy limit.

“We remind all drivers and users of the temporary crossing to drive with due care and attention at all times, obey caution signs, and respect enforcement personnel,” the MIDH emphasized.

The MIDH apologized for any inconvenience caused while reiterating their unwavering commitment to safety. The MIDH also thanked motorists and pedestrians for their cooperation during the construction of the new Joe Taylor Bridge.

In February of 2023, when they were doing work on the approaches of the bridge, the MIDH said the Joe Taylor Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in Belize, adding that “sooner rather than later the MIDH will have to look seriously at a new bridge.”
