By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has strongly criticized the People’s United Party (PUP) government for its decision to abstain from a recent vote at the Organization of American States (OAS) regarding election fraud in Venezuela.
The vote called for the Venezuelan government to release election data, as mandated by Venezuelan law, to ensure the integrity of election results and guard against electoral fraud.
“The fact that the Minister of Elections & Boundaries Hon. Henry Charles was in Venezuela as an observer for their Presidential Elections and has said nothing in regards to the refusal of the Maduro Administration to release the elections data is disturbing.
A breach of elections integrity in any Democracy should trouble us all but as Belizeans we should take special offense to the silence of our Elections Minister’s silence on one of the alleged biggest elections fraud ever committed,” the UDP expressed in a statement.
The UDP is calling on the Venezuelan government to promptly publish precinct-by-precinct voting tallies, which are essential for corroborating official election results.
The UDP also demands a comprehensive verification process involving international observers, as required by Venezuelan law.
“We are disheartened by the pattern that suppresses the will of the Venezuelan people when the Opposition Leader who won her primary with 93% of the vote is banned from running then other members of the unified leading Opposition Parties were arrested and jailed before the Presidential Elections and continue to be arrested and targeted.
We appeal to the Maduro regime to not further trample on democracy by failing to release the official data that verifies the election results,” the UDP added.
The UDP also expressed their concern over the civil unrest that has led to the deaths of 15 people and called for an end to the violence.
The UDP says that it advocates for free, fair, and transparent elections to restore integrity and democratic values in Venezuela.
