Progresso’s Alwin Zelaya suffers broken leg during Premier League of Belize match, club asks for help for Zelaya’s surgery

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso’s Alwin Zelaya suffered a broken leg during the opening match of the 2023-2024 Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Season his team was playing against the Belmopan Bandits on Saturday night at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town.

The Belize Men’s National Team player had been injured at the end of the previous season and was happy to be back, according to Progresso FC, just for him to find himself on the sideline once again and now with a fractured leg.

Due to the lack of a stretcher, Zelaya had to be taken off the field on the plastic table that the FFB officials, who were in charge of the game, were using and had to be rushed to the hospital in Orange Walk.

“Last night was the start of the PLB. It was a happy day for all the players of Progresso, but especially so for Alwin, who was out for several games after suffering an injury last season, but he had recovered and was excited to be back to help bring a championship to Shuga City,” Progresso FC wrote in a social media post on Sunday.

“The day turned to the worst last night as he suffered a broken foot against Belmopan Bandits. Alwin needs surgery, and we are asking for your support to help Alwin.”

Members of the Progresso FC club were at the People’s Stadium on Sunday during the National Amateur Interdistrict Championship Semifinal Match asking fans for contributions towards the Alwin Zelaya fund.
