Press Release
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has officially handed over equipment valued at over $151,000 to the Ministry of Health. This donation is part of the “Building Climate Change Resilience and Social Integration of Displaced People in Settlements of Western Belize” project.
Launched in February 2022, this joint initiative between IOM and the Government of Belize—funded by the European Union with a grant of BZ$4,600,000—aims to enhance resilience in five Western Belize communities: Santa Familia, Billy White, Los Tambos, Duck Run 1, and Duck Run 3. Key project components include the construction of five hurricane shelters/community centers, a polyclinic, upgrades to water systems in three communities, and the installation of culverts and drainage in two communities. Additionally, the project provides a water bowser, firefighting equipment, and training in firefighting, shelter management, and first aid.
The polyclinic, being constructed by the Government, is expected to be completed in October 2024 and will serve over 5,000 residents. The recent handover of 23 various types of equipment, which includes EKG Machines, Diagnostic sets, adult and paediatric scales, crash carts, defibrillators, dopplers, refrigerators, computers and printers, marks the completion of IOM’s deliverables under the project.
The final deliverables for the Government’s side of the project also include a hurricane shelter/community center in Duck Run 1 and the rehabilitation of Los Tambos Primary School for use as a hurricane shelter. Both are anticipated to be completed in the last quarter of 2024.
The project, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (6, 11, 15, and 17) and the Global Compact for Migration Objectives (1, 2, 8, 16), is set to conclude by December 2024.
