By Aaron Humes: The National Evangelical Association of Belize, several of whose members publicly protested in front of the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan when it raised the “rainbow flag” as part of an LGBT pride month, today claims that the incident is part of plans to target Belize for a change in beliefs toward those living alternative lifestyles.
The “truth” according to the Evangelicals is that the LGBT agenda is couched in references to human rights for all, which they say redefine the term in ways that are contradictory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is crystal clear in protecting religious freedoms and the natural family.
As proof, it cites the response to the National Youth Council vote on June 11 to remove references to gender and gender equality from their Constitution, citing its association with the LGBT movement. It condemns opponents the Youth Advocacy Movement, subset of the Belize Family Life Association (BFLA) as a partner of Caleb Orozco’s United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM) in advancing these changes.
To U.S. Ambassador Carlos Moreno, NEAB argues that LGBT already possess human rights and those rights should be protected, but not extended to “special rights” promoted by foreigners and which they say undermine Belizean sovereignty and laws.
