International News: Mexican drug kingpin who founded Zetas released from U.S. prison

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Osiel Cardenas, a notorious Mexican drug lord and former leader of the Gulf Cartel, was released from U.S. prison on Friday and handed over to immigration officials, Reuters report.

Cardenas, who led the Gulf Cartel and founded the Zetas, a violent armed wing, was sentenced to 25 years in 2010 after his capture in 2003.

The Zetas became infamous for their extreme violence and criminal activities.

Following his release from Terre Haute, Indiana, Cardenas is now in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody.

Reports suggest the Biden administration plans to deport him to Mexico on Monday.

Cardenas faces unresolved charges in Mexico and is currently held at a U.S. detention center.

Leo Silva, a former DEA agent, noted Cardenas’s role in escalating organized crime violence in Mexico, attributing the rise in brutality to his tactics
