By Horace Palacio: This morning, a towhead transporting a container to the pier head at the Port of Belize veered off the bridge and plunged into the sea. The accident, captured on video, shows the guardrails giving way as the towhead topples into the water.
The mishap occurred shortly after the passing area, where vehicles typically yield to oncoming traffic from the pier head. The container was reportedly destined for a business in Belmopan.
Fortunately, the driver was rescued and is safe. However, the contents of the container are now adrift in the waters near the pier head.
Authorities are on the scene assessing the situation and investigating the cause of the accident.
