UDP expresses support to Deputy chairman in light of “aggravated assault” charges

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The UDP has issued a statement expressing its support for Deputy Chairman Alberto August.

August has been charged with aggravated assault of an officer from Elections and Boundaries.

August was arrested and charged last week before being granted bail.

The UDP claims that August is facing “baseless, vindictive and malicious charges designed to silence dissent and distract from a very elaborate and well-organized system of illegal voter registration and electoral fraud at the San Ignacio office of the Elections and Boundaries Department.”

In addition, the UDP said that August is being charged for saying the “Emperor has no clothes.”

“While this kind of practice is the norm in oppressed countries led by autocratic regimes the PUP wishes to model governance off, the Freedoms of Speech and Expression are still constitutionally enshrined for every single Belizean citizen, including political opponents,” the statement added.

The UDP says that the charges are “baseless and dangerous to our democracy.”

The UDP further calls on all Belizeans to raise objections and “stand up for democracy.”
