By Aaron Humes.: Dr. Herbert Gayle, anthropologist specializing in social violence and based at the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica, is in Belize to launch his new book, based on the major 
report “Male Social Violence and Urban Participation in Belize” released in 2010.
Dr. Gayle plans the book as an update to the seminal results of his study, and commends Belize that Belize appears to have embraced research and strategic planning as an answer to social ills.
The next step, he says, is implementation: “We have very nice ten year and twenty year plans but we’re not very good at getting people to answer the question – what are you going to do for me this year, because we’re not waiting on twenty years.”
Gayle contends that victims cannot make the change, the perpetrators, or “actors,” can. This includes witnesses to violence. He also addresses isolation and social segregation and calls for everyone to get involved.
Fortunately for Belize, there is the public will to see better, but this must be matched by the drive to truly get off the ground and work.
The launch takes place at the Image Factory in Belize City at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
