By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Following leaked documents alleging that under the administration of former Belmopan Mayor Sharon Palacio, several parcels of land valued at over $19,000 were sold in some instances for $500, $1000 and $2,000.
In addition, some of the names on the list include 1 former Belmopan City Councilor and the former Mayor’s relatives.
Palacio has broken the silence on the land issue saying that “poor people need land too.”
“I was glad that I was able to help ordinary Belizeans who would never have been able to get a piece of land in Belmopan in general or at Innovabel in particular.
While attempting to reverse actions of past Mayors especially relating to land distribution has never been successful, I am not surprised that the current Mayor and his cohorts are investing time and energy trying to erase and minimize my legacy: that is to empower the disenfranchised. I am also not surprised that lands which were ill gotten by the wealthy will never see the light of day,” Palacio stated.
“Poor people need land too.
Let it be known that past Mayor Sheran Palacio has not gained a single copper from any land allocated to any of the current owners. Even my councillors, in spite of a not-so-cozy relationship, deliberately caused by persons with vested interest to minimize and diminish my position as the first woman mayor of Belmopan who happens to be Black,” she added.
The former Belmopan Mayor also claims that former City Councilors got their lots too.
