By Dalila Ical.: The 19th annual Belize Police Youth Cadet Summer Camp was held over the past week and today organizers and participants held an official closing ceremony.
The 277 youth cadets from across the country, including San Pedro, Ambergris Caye took part in a small parade through the principal streets of Orange Walk Town, where the camp was held this year.
The cadets gathered at Trial Farm Government School where they engaged in sessions on life skills, educational lectures and tours and sports. Organizers brought in different lecturers to speak with the youth on topics like sexual and reproductive health, “say no to drugs and gangs”, discipline, decision making and setting goals.
They also participated in sports including football, basketball, volleyball and track and field. They even took part in a foot drill competition and the first ever Mr. and Mrs. Belize Police Youth Cadet.
About 65 instructors, including police and parents were present throughout the week helping at the camp. It is funded by government through the Ministry of National Security. Organizers say they are grateful for the support they received this year as they had a great response from the community.
