By Richard Harrison: I was invited to go to the Feria de Benque Viejo del Carmen Thursday night….I have not been to the fiesta in a while…although I used to go every year during my younger days.
There are beautiful girls all over Belize….but Benque Viejo has a special concentration of them over many years….from my dads days.
Thursday night was the beauty pageant to select the Senorita Flor de la Feria, or queen of the town.
What I saw was very impressive….seven beautiful candidates…all well prepared for the various parts of the event…elegant costumes….all well spoken….the entire program well choreographed and rolled out without a hitch…..the stage design, lighting and sound first class…from cultural folklore presentations to more youthful pop….announcements almost exclusively in Spanish. A Mister Nabet was mentioned as the key person behind this well organized event.
It must have been tough for the judges….as all seven candidates were winners….however Benque Viejo del Carmen got itself a beautiful and intelligent queen, Miss Rianne Gutierrez Mendez. Congratulations to her…she will make Benque Viejo del Carmen proud.
The fair makes a lot of money from the pageant, with a $25 entrance fee and a full house in attendance. They should support the girls more with gowns and foot wear for each day of the fair, make up and accessories….so that this not burden the candidates families…and so that each year the most beautiful girls of the community can be attracted to participate.
The fiesta finishes on Sunday, 17 July.
