By Aaron Humes: The Belize U-23 male junior volleyball team needed 5 of the last 6 points available to defeat Honduras in the opening match of the Central American championship in Panama.
Belize won a tight encounter 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11 and is level on 3 points with Panama and Nicaragua, who also won their openers in five sets. The team next faces Costa Rica.
According to the Belize Volleyball Association team captain Bryton Codd had 25 points of which 22 were kills (spikes). Raluni had 16 points. In the press interview, Bryton commented “the team played much better than previous times. The team trained a lot for this tournament. We are here to demonstrate what Belize can do. The team played with heart, not giving up on any point and that helped get them the victory.
Team Belize’s remaining match schedule (Belize Time):
Tuesday: 5 pm vs Costa Rica
Wednesday: 7 pm vs Panama
Thursday: Day off
Friday: 5 pm vs El Salvador
Saturday: 5 pm vs Guatemala
Sunday: 3 pm vs Nicaragua
The tournament is a round-robin with the top teams qualifying to the continental championship.
