By Dalila Ical: The Corozal branch of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) is keeping a close watch on Hurricane Earl as he makes his way to Belize in the next few hours.  Hurricane-Ernesto

Earlier today, NEMO Corozal opened ten shelters in areas that are prone to floods. These shelters are being manned by NEMO personnel and assisted by members of village councils in the Corozal District.

The shelters that were opened earlier in Corozal Town are Paraiso Government School, Guadalupe RC School and Church of Christ Primary School. In the villages, the shelters opened are: Patchakan Community Center, Xaibe RC School, Ranchito Community Center, Cristo Rey RC School, Sarteneja RC School, and Concepcion Community Center. There are also other shelters that are opening at the moment.

Willard Levy, District Coordinator for NEMO Corozal urges residents to remain calm and be on alert and to make all necessary arrangements like purchasing goods and other important items. He also advises that if they are going to a shelter, that families identify the shelter and be ready when they are opened.

The NEMO team in Corozal is presently meeting to decide what other shelters should be opened and other necessary operations that need to be carried out as the hurricane pushes towards Belize.

Casinos are already closed, the Corozal Commercial Free Zone is closed, and NEMO Corozal has also passed a directive to the business community to release their employees so they can make necessary arrangements and preparations for the hurricane.

Stores have also been asked to refrain from selling alcohol and police will be patrolling the area to ensure that the law is enforced.

Lastly, Levy asks that the Belizean public do NOT listen to rumors but tune in to their radio for reliable reports and updates on Hurricane Earl.
