By BBN Staff: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala today published the agreement between Belize and that country on the enforcement of criminal sentences in the Diario de Centroamerica.
The agreement allows persons convicted of crimes to serve their time in their native countries, while both parties aim to keep ongoing friendly bilateral relations. This is stipulated in the third article of the agreement while in article six the agreement states that the convict should be informed of the provisions within the agreement and the process of their transfer.
The agreement will run for ten years and is automatically renewed unless one side, through a written diplomatic note terminates the agreement which will take effect one year after such termination is announced.
According to the Guatemalan news article, the agreement is based on the “Agreement on a framework for negotiations and measures to promote trust between Guatemala and Belize” that was signed on September 7th 2005. One of the purposes of that agreement is to maintain and strengthen friendly bilateral relations between both countries until the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute is resolved.
It is also based on another agreement signed by both Foreign Ministers in Washington DC on January 24, 2014. That agreement also aims at strengthening bilateral relations between both countries.
