By BBN Staff: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) has issued a proposed strategy to provide aid to those affected by the recent Hurricane Earl.
Their proposition, titled “BPP’s Hurricane Earl 3-R Plan” includes Relief, Recovery and Rebuilding. As part of the relief efforts, BPP proposes a tri-partisan committee be formed “to meet with international agencies to discuss AID with full commitment to accountability, transparency and service to those affected”.
Under this section of the plan the BPP also suggests that the most affected areas be declared disaster areas; that NEMO supply food, shelter and clothing to most affected areas; that security forces be deployed to affected areas especially Caye Caulker and San Pedro; a Statutory instrument be passed to exempt taxes on fuel, construction supplies and building materials for rebuilding all affected industries and disaster areas and another SI to put all foreclosures on a two year moratorium along with other efforts to facilitate loans.
As part of the recovery plan, the BPP suggests that the damages to the agriculture sector be assessed for quick assistance to farmers, adding that the National Bank make loans available at low interest rates.
Under rebuilding, the BPP includes housing and infrastructure and that a stipend be allowed for families in considerable need.
While the BPP suggests the plan be carried out by a tri-partisan committee, it is yet to be seen whether the Barrow administration would even entertain the idea.
