By Aaron Humes: After today’s historic judgment in the Supreme Court, executive director of UNIBAM Caleb Orozco says the next step is to make sure LGBT persons are treated with the same respect as everyone else.

In that regard, he stated that the Constitution “is not toilet paper” – it has meaning.

He has therefore asked the Government to consider not appealing the ruling as it is its right; more importantly, he asks the Government to begin taking up its responsibility to LGBT persons, to protect them under the law. caleb 3

Senior Counsel Lisa Shoman also noted that the expanded interpretations of sex as in orientation within the Constitution and religious basis of the Preamble to the Constitution will create more questions in the weeks ahead.

However small, Orozco recalls some gestures of support from sectors of society which helps ease the heavy burden he has held for three years.

But he said he still has to look over his shoulder for violent elements that may want to do him harm – and while he accepts it will likely always be that way for him, it does not always have to be that way for the next generation.

Of course, the fight is not over yet: the result may still be appealed up to the Caribbean Court of Justice.
