Tuesday, July 21st, 2015. BMG: Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) is currently doing fruit stripping, ground spraying and delimitation trapping in Hopkins Village, Stann Creek District, and the Sapodilla Cayes, Toledo District, where the Mediterranean Fruit Fly has been detected.
BAHA is doing its best to ensure that Belize remains the only country in the region that is free from this pest, as the establishment and spreading of Medfly could result in the loss of our export markets and affect small entrepreneurs who will be unable to sell their fruit due to quarantine restrictions.
Medfly could prevent Belizeans in infested areas from doing simple things like being able to eat fresh fruit; hence it is the responsibility of all Belizeans and visitors to the country, to ensure fruits are brought into Belize only with the use of a valid BAHA import permit.
Belize needs to remain free of Medfly.
