By BBN Staff: The citrus industry in Belize suffered another blow after final estimates have placed losses at 16.5 million dollars due to Hurricane Earl.

According to 7 News, the industry stakeholders have asked the government for assistance as losses have left them in need of financial assistance.

The losses stand at an estimated 569, 444 boxes of oranges and 133, 585 boxes of grapefruit.

Growers need financial support to fertilize groves that lost leaves due to the strong winds of Hurricane Earl. A request has been made to GOB to take steps to enable the restricting of loans, a two year moratorium on land tax payments, provide duty free diesel, and faster GST reimbursements.

The banana industry has also sought government’s assistance in easing the financial blow they sustained from the tropical storm.
