Sandhill Summer Day Camp underway

Aaron Humes Reporting: The second Annual Sand Hill Summer Day Camp opened on Monday, 20 July 2015 at the Sand Hill Community Center with approximately 60 children, ages five to fifteen from the surrounding villages attending. According to organizer Delfena Mitchell, the week long camp program activities includes learning to use a sewing machine and sewing bags, knapsacks, pencil cases, high-energy games and sports, crafts, dance, songs, and ends with a day of swimming at the Princess Pool.

The camp services provides a positive and supportive setting with camp counselors from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) teaming up with volunteer youths from the local communities, teachers, parents, and volunteers from Belize Volunteers Club learning and sharing together as they encourage the participants to practice gratitude with grace, fellowship and friendship, joy and laughter, and pride and achievement as they go about their day.

This is the second year the students from VCU’s Academic Scholars Program in Real Environment (ASPIRE) are back to facilitate the Sand Hill Summer Day Camp.  They are lead by Erin Burke-Brown Ph.D., Michael Rackett, Ph.D, Nerice Lochansky, MA, Grady Hart, MPA, and fifteen student volunteers.

IMG 8547 300x224 Sandhill Summer Day Camp underwayBoth the visiting volunteers and our local volunteers will spend their second week volunteering by working in the community.  They will give some of the bus shelters in Sand Hill a fresh coat of paint and will be working alongside other volunteers from Belize Volunteer Club to plant a garden and paint the Water Walker Boys and Girls in Belize City.

The camp is free and runs thru 24 July, 2015.

Sponsors for this year’s camp include the Sandhill Village Council, Major Lloyd Jones, Princess Hotel and Casino, Edmonton Rotary Club of Edmonton, Canada, Bowen and Bowen, Delfena Mitchell, and Diane Campbell of San Pedro.
