By BBN: The People’s United Party (PUP), in a press conference at Independence Hall in Belize City this afternoon, announced that it is organizing a protest to be held on September 7th in Belize City in response to what the party considers rampant and obvious instances of corruption and abuse of power.
PUP Party Leader John Briceño, flanked by party deputies including Julius Espat, Cordel Hyde and Kareem Musa among others, called on vicil society groups including the unions and advocacy organizations to join in the protest. Briceño said it is time for Belizeans to take to the streets to express its displeasure with the United Democratic Party (UDP) government.
Briceño pointed to the Auditor General’s Immigration report and detailed several instances of corruption as cited by the report, including an instance where the Prime Minister and his wife are name for making a nationality recommendation for the PM’s brother-in-law even though, according to the report, he did not qualify for nationality. Briceño said the events at last Friday’s Sitting of the House was planned by the government as a distraction to keep the details of the Immigration report from the public.
Briceño also spoke of other matters including the investigation into the beheading of Pastor Llewelyn Lucas. According to Briceño, PM Dean Barrow announced at last Friday’s House Sitting that the investigation had come to a close. Briceño added that if Belize can bend to Guatemala’s demands for an independent investigation into the country’s own Belize defense Force (BDF) the government should likewise concede to an investigation into the heinous murder which links several government ministers to the accused murderer William Mason.
Caribbean Shores area representative Musa also spoke of the legality of Espat’s suspension from the House. Musa outlined the standing orders which govern the House and said the Speaker did not follow the rules of the standing orders making the suspension null and void. The PUP say the intend to take the suspension to court to challenge the decision.
