By Aaron Humes: Teenager Stephen Mejia of Antelope Street Extension was found yesterday morning with a loaded 9-millimeter pistol by a team of officers of the Strike Team, North side, Belize City who were on mobile patrol on Dunn Street, Belize City.
On Thursday at around 8:40 a.m., Constables Erwin Reid, Earl Hamilton were together with other police officers of the North side Strike Team, when their attention was drawn to two men riding on separate bicycles.
Officer Reid approached and then they decided to ride their bicycles into a yard in the area; the officers caught up to them and PC Hamilton grabbed one of the men and that is when the captured man shouted, “Run ghost run,“ to his friend who ran.
Reid chased the second suspect and observed him take something from his right hand, what appeared to be a black object resembling a firearm, and threw it across a zinc fence on the right hand side of a yard in the area.
The suspect was identified as Mejia, and police found nothing on him but recovered the pistol and nine live rounds of ammunition from the area where it was thrown.
Mejia pleaded not guilty to firearms and ammunition charges before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza and he was denied bail and remanded until October 26, 2016.
