By Karl Burke: It is only right and just that all Belizean Friends and Friends of Belize at home and abroad come together to celebrate with the greatest gusto Belize’s September Celebrations highlighting The Battle of St. George’s Caye (10th September) and Independence Day (21st September) all month long, as this year we proclaim to the world that Belize is “Sovereign and Strong, Together As One!” During this time of festivity and deepened sense of love and service of country and fellow citizens, “The Jewel” comes alive, and everyone in the land and many beyond our beloved, God-blessed shores can ‘feel’ the loving vibes! As a multicultural and multifaceted nation, in a real and dynamic way, individually and collectively, we attend in a special way to doing a much better job of keeping track of our own and each other’s human dignity. Yes, indeed, all month long! But, then, oftentimes, during the next eleven months, through the vicissitudes of life, how well do we continue to keep track of our own and each other’s human dignity?

Human Dignity is an individual’s or group’s sense of self-respect and self-worth, physical and psychological integrity and empowerment. It is the most important human right from which all other fundamental rights derive. So, while we embrace these ideals more worthily during the much-loved and much-enjoyed September Celebrations, how can we get a better handle on doing so on an ongoing basis? The invitation for us to always keep track of our own and each other’s human dignity is at once simple and profound: be kind to yourself now and always; be kind to others now and always; be kind to the environment now and always.

Gentle Reminders on Being Kind to Yourself Now and Always: Be a friend. Eat healthy. Strive. Love. Relax. Sleep. Make good choices. Exercise. Stand up for yourself. Minimize risks. Embrace your identity. Be positive. Be useful. Maintain your strengths and improve your weaknesses. Celebrate your uniqueness. Have fun. Learn and grow. Be proud of yourself and the things you say and do.

Gentle Reminders on Being Kind to Others Now and Always: Respect others. Forgive. Praise. Show courtesy. Fair go: treat others with equal respect. Cooperate. Resolve conflict. Include others. Do not bully. Value relationships. Value family. Build your people skills. Build relationships. When appropriate, agree to disagree. Show care and compassion for others.

Gentle Reminders on Being Kind to the Environment Now and Always: Do not pollute. Save water. Clean up. Conserve energy. Use renewable energy. Develop sustainable resources. Preserve cultural heritage. Produce and use environmentally-friendly products. Care for wildlife. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Value the environment.

In conclusion, all Belizean Friends and Friends of Belize at home and abroad, as we come together to celebrate Belize as “Sovereign and Strong, Together As One!” may we ever strive to do so this September and always by keeping track of our own and each other’s human dignity by being kind to self, others and the environment! Happy September Celebrations!
