By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow was a busy man today, scheduling back to back meetings with the three unions representing workers from the utility companies this morning and meeting with representatives of the Joint Negotiating Team of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU), Public Service Union (PSU) and Association of Public Service Senior Managers (APSSM) this afternoon.
President of the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, Marvin Mora, who is also general secretary of one of the utilities’ unions, the Belize Energy Workers’ Union (BEWU) and was appointed spokesman today, felt the meeting did much to advance discussions on current social issues, a point of view echoed by the Prime Minister in a more expansive explanation.
However, this afternoon’s meeting was less productive as the BNTU would not be budged from their position of not deferring the three percent salary adjustment, which the PSU and APSSM have agreed to.
