By BBN Staff: Belize marked the 35th anniversary of its Independence with official ceremonies and parties nationwide on this Wednesday.

This September 21 comes at a major crossroads in Belizean history, when much of the nation is agitating for change and there is unease about where our young nation is going at this time.

Leader of the Opposition John Briceno warned that as a nation we have drifted away from the principles that National Hero George Price as Prime Minister developed on the first Independence Day in 1981 – to ensure that everyone has a successful life and contributes to the overall development of the nation. That cannot happen, he said, when so many have so little and those who have more act so arrogantly about it.

But the P.U.P. leader reminded that Belizeans have never feared the future as long as we work together to achieve our just objectives.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Dean Barrow had no gifts to bring Belizeans this year, but he did predict an economic recovery for Belize even as he made a measured departure at the start of his Independence Day address, soberly looking at Belize’s social disconnect.

According to the Prime Minister, Belize appears to have never been less “together as one,” pointing to political as well as divisions in the labour and church sectors.

One rare area of agreement is on the issue of the Guatemalan claim, as the Prime Minister paid tribute to those who defend Belize’s territorial sovereignty and pledged the Government’s continued support.

While acknowledging that Belize does suffer from a recession currently, Barrow boldly insisted that recovery is around the corner, led by the major industries such as sugar, citrus, banana and marine products.
