COLA meeting

By BBN Staff: Citizens Organized for Liberty through Action (COLA), in a release issued this morning, condemned the actions of the Government, calling it overt and saying that behind closed doors GOb has tried to undermine the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU).

In their release, COLA says that GOB has launched an offensive against the BNTU and its thousands of members who are standing up to fight against corruption and abuse of power.

COLA says it is greatly concerned by the PM’s statement where he clearly attempts to create division within the BNTU and between the unions and social partners by spreading misinformation.

“We find it ludicrous that the man who promoted ‘civil disobedience’ and encouraged widespread unrest while in Opposition will now accuse teachers of being unreasonable and holding the children of Belize at ransom,” COLA said.

COLA goes on to say that it condemns the personal attacks on the BNTU’s leadership and on the teachers by operatives of the United Democratic Party who refer to the leadershiop of the BNTU as “illiterate” and “money-hungry.”

These campaigns on the educators of our children are cowardly and unwarranted, and reveal to what depths this arrogant government will go to protect Ministers accused of corruption, COLA stated.

COLA expressed its support for the teachers and the planned industrial action.

Belizeans are fed up of this administration’s reluctance to fight corruption even when it is documented in black and white, COLA said.

“We are fed up of high-ranking UDPs like Elvin Penner being protected from criminal charges even when they rape our birthright. We are fed up of the Prime Minister ignoring all calls for change and calls for transparency and accountability. We have seen that this administration is not serious about scrutiny and not serious about doing the right thing for the country and the people,” COLA said.

The release ends by stating that COLA commits to standing behind the teachers against the victimization and the attacks on them.
