By G. Michael Reid: I find the message from the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) extremely relevant and purposeful….

The politicians of this country have run roughshod over the people for too long. They live large, travel the world at our expense and grow rich while oppressing us with high taxes and poor quality of living.

Like Luke Palacio, President of the BNTU, I do not believe that a violent overthrow of the government is the answer or is it necessary…we cannot save this country by destroying it…A violent overthrow of any government will also set a dangerous precedent and no government will ever exist in peace thereafter.

I am not happy when I hear the Opposition calling for “Elections Now” in particular such a short time after the last trip to the polls…We do all need to demand however, and I mean UDP, PUP, and any other P…the proper infrastructure and mechanism to dissuade corruption and to address it whenever it rears its ugly head…All Belizeans from all walks of life should join in this cause and demand better from our government…If UDP supporters can understand that this is not about overthrowing your party or upsetting your applecart but putting in place the rigid structures for good governance, then maybe they would be more inclined to see the sense in this…We keep complaining and grumbling about all that is wrong but we refuse to join our voices and hearts to the cry against this wrong…The UDP is the government and until they are removed via free and fair elections, then we can only demand that they govern in the best interest of all Belizeans.

I do support a four year term as opposed to five and I support a set date for elections…It is time for the thirteenth senator and it time for an Integrity Commission…Maybe both that thirteenth senator and some members of the Integrity Commission could be recruited from the Diaspora.

Let us get creative people, let us get brave but most of all, let us get moving and get this done!!!!!
