By BBN Staff: Yesterday, Belize’s state-run telephone company, Belize Telemedia Limited, responded to queries about its employment of a Colombian telecommunication company, Ingetelca, to assist with their recovery process following the damages to its infrastructure from Hurricane Earl.
However, the crews that have been seen in the Belama area of Belize City recently come from Guatemala, causing some alarm.
In the company’s statement, the company explains that it did not have enough resources to restore service to affected customers of its fixed internet and home phone service which lost service due to significant damage to its copper network during Hurricane Earl. As such, the company engaged both Belizean and regional contractors to do the repairs, of which Ingetelca is one.
Ingetelca, according to B.T.L., does work all over Central America but is itself owned by Colombian nationals; however, the seven support crews assigned came from Guatemala given the nature of the emergency and logistics involved. The crews have been seconded to Belize until October seventh.
Previously, the company told another media house that there is no cause for alarm as a B.T.L. technician is always present alongside the Guatemalan technicians.
On its website, Ingetelca names Intelco as a former client in Belize.
