By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) announced last week its plan of industrial action. The union has been to several meetings negotiating with the Prime Minister.

However, the cry for good governance practices as outlined in their letter with eight demands that was sent to the Prime Minister has not been answered satisfactorily.

Since then, they have garnered major support from social partners and concerned Belizeans countrywide.

The Government and the Ministry of Education have been preparing for the BNTU’s planned strike as well.

The minister has said that teachers will be hired temporarily to replace those teachers supporting the union’s industrial action. They also sent out a letter requesting the names of all the teachers that will be supporting the strike.

Last week, senior UDP officials were seen visiting schools in Belize city in an attempt to dissuade teachers from supporting and on Friday, flyers were being given out to parents in front of a primary school in Santa Elena stating that schools would be open on Monday and children will be safe.

A ‘fact sheet’ was also issued accusing the union of being politically motivated and stating that children are being deprived of quality class time due to this move by the union.

BNTU’s president, Luke Palacio has accused GOB of deliberately trying to union bust.

It is being reported that some teachers from the Stann creek district were paid today to not attend the BNTU’s rally to be held there tomorrow.

We have also been reliably informed that police officers day offs for Monday October 3 have been cancelled and all officers countrywide were instructed to report to work tomorrow.
