By BBN Staff: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) issued a release today stating that it recognizes Government’s announcement of its intent to sign the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), on 9th December 2016, as being a long overdue determination.

The BPP says they are informing Belizeans to not ‘relax’ their demands for the all elected officials to adhere to good governance practises and principles, as government’s announcement is but the initial step in a process that requires: Ratification by the Senate, Acceptance, Approval and/or Accession via the requisite government bodies.

“Each of these steps are required to ensure that Belize is officially party to the treaty and therefore in full adherence.” They say.

The release goes on to state “Therefore, given the extreme cunning demonstrated by the PM, in particular, amid the just pressure that is being brought to bare on his administration, by the BNTU and its partners, Belizeans must not fall victim to what fundamentally amounts to yet another means through which the Barrow Administration is seeking to bide its time.”

The BPP reiterated its unequivocal support of the BNTU and urges all: unions, civil society organisations and tertiary level students to redouble their efforts, in order to ensure the Prime Minister makes good on this promise.

“In view of the heightened level of subterfuge employed by Mr. Barrow, our call is more than justified because the aforementioned process could conceivably take an extended period of time, meanwhile during which the maladministration of the PM and his government shall continue,” the release mentioned.

The release ends by making a call to everyone to demand the GOB’s expeditious carrying-out of its intent to sign on to the UNCAC, so as to ensure FULL compliance and adherence to the instrument.
