By Delroy Cuthkelvin: The administration led by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow since 2008 has excelled in many ways. The physical transformation of the nation’s infrastructure network is one that is unprecedented and will no doubt go down in history. But another important thing that distinguishes this government is its unyielding commitment to human development and social transformation.
In 2009, when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommended the most austere measures to cope with the global recession that had hit home, this administration resisted the IMF’s bitter pill and applied its own organically Belizean, home-grown remedy, with targeted spending in infrastructure development and continued poverty alleviation programs. Today, in the midst of another recession, and with limited international assistance, this Government is assisting every Belize family affected by Hurricane Earl, many with new houses, and hundreds with materials to repair their homes.
With this kind of track-record, the Dean Barrow administration has the credibility and moral authority to summon the nation to make the necessary collective sacrifice to assist those who are most in need at this time. We call it “COMPASSION IN THE MIDST OF RECESSION”; and our argument is – a simple picture that is worth a thousand words.
