By BBN Staff:Prime Minister Dean Barrow has accused the Belize National Teachers’ Union of insisting on strike action without properly consulting with Government on their eight-point agenda.

To that end, he has sought to meet with the umbrella National Trade Union Congress of Belize, of which the BNTU is a part, and which he says has taken on the mantle of the good governance agenda which the BNTU espouses.

On Sunday, during KREM Sunday Review, BNTU president Luke Palacio responded via an address in which he set out the basis of the Union’s action – the teachers wanted to get the Government’s attention on national issues that they feel directly affects governance and, indirectly, their quality of life.

Directly responding to the Prime Minister, Palacio reiterated that all unions have the right to bargain with Government separately, despite coming under the NTUCB, and that Government is trying again to “divide and conquer” them and finding a “softer playing field” in which tackle issues it is seemingly trying to avoid.

The Union continues into its sixth day and second week of industrial action on Tuesday. It plans to spend the day in community service and continued public education
