By BBN Staff: Nicole became the sixth hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season last Thursday and was located well south of Bermuda. Throughout the same day, it continued strengthening upgrading it to a category two status.
Late this evening, Nicole was upgraded to a Category three hurricane as it reached 115 mph maximum sustained winds. It was located about 210 miles south-southwest of Bermuda.
It is projected to hit Bermuda on Thursday as a major hurricane as it may intensify more before it passes the island.
A hurricane warning is already in effect for Bermuda and it is expected that they will experience some tropical storm conditions (39-73 mph winds) beginning tonight, with hurricane conditions (74+ mph winds) likely arriving by early Thursday.
Heavy rainfall is also forecasted with 4 to 8 inches of rain expected through Thursday.
Since the 1950’s, there have only been three category three hurricanes that have passed through Bermuda.
