By BBN Staff: Almost 240 hours or 14,400 minutes ago the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) first announced that it would strike.
Since then it has lost thousands of dollars in salaries and logged behind in the progress of its syllabus.
This sacrifice so great and so impacting is all a part of its efforts to have the Government of Belize not only address labor related issues or the adjustment of its salaries which were promised to take effect since April; but to have GOB put measures in place to effectively tackle and ameliorate corruption.
For a nation rocked by scandals in immigration, lands and other ministries this is a noble thing.
The BNTU’s protest against the Barrow administration may be longer than its protest against the Musa administration, which it had too charged with corruption in 2005.
However, it is left to be seen if this fight is a sustainable one. Will the BNTU fold or will they go all in? As the iconic Bob Marley once said, “only time will tell.”
