By BBN Staff: Tomorrow, Thursday, the Government of Belize (GoB) will sign a Statutory Instrument for the appointment of the long awaited 13th Senator.
At a press conference following a meeting with the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) last Thursday, Prime Minister Dean Barrow committed to signing the SI.
In its campaign manifesto, which led up to the 2012 double elections, the United Democratic Party (UDP) had promised the senator’s appointment.
Four years later that promise is coming to fruition. However, it will take another three months before that Senator is actually named.
According to PM Barrow, that Senator will represent the Non-Governmental Organizations and as such, the NGO Act has to be amended and the NGO community has to put the infrastructure in place for their senator’s selection.
BBN will continue to monitor developments.
