By BBN Staff: While Belize’s young people remain the group most affected by unemployment, poverty and crime, the Department of Youth Services (DYS) has always found positive reasons to celebrate our Belizean youth.

This year is no different as young people ages 14-29 will be celebrated across the country from November, 7 to the 10th at the 2016 National Youth Awards.

Each year the Department of Youth Services (DYS) engages energetic speakers who are able to motivate and inspire youth to lead positive, non violent, productive lives.

According to a statement from the DYS, this year’s speaker is none other than US National, “Dashaun “Jiwe” Morris, actor, best selling author, motivational speaker, reformed gang leader and gang mediator.”

The statement further reads that Morris had, “moved to Phoenixin the third grade and his childhood had been pushed to the margins.”

“Already a victim of poverty and neglect, he found acceptance and, most importantly, protection, in a network of older neighborhood boys.

What he lacked at home -his mother addicted to drugs and severely depressed and his big brother detached from him- he found with the
Bloods, a notorious street gang,” the statement added.

According to the article, the co-founder of the bloods gang, T. Rodgers, had served as a Godfather/guardian to Morris.

With the Belizean youth divided into “Bloods” and “Crips,” “Gaza” and “Gully” among other labels, Morris’ visits seeks to be impacting.

He is scheduled to arrive in Belize on November 3rd. He will address the nation via live broadcast of the 2016 National Youth Awards on
November 4th, at 7:30pm and will be hosting forums around the country beginning November 7th at the following locations:

November 7th, Dangriga Venue TBA
November 8th, Belize City, Bliss Center for the Performing Arts 9:00 am
November 9th, Orange Walk, Crystal Place Auditorium 9:30am
November 10th, San Ignacio, Sacred Heart Auditorium 9:30
