Wednesday, July 29th, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: Last week there was a gathering of leaders of municipal bodies in Central America, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
It took place in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye and Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley, who heads the Belize Mayors Association, says the meeting was to finalize the Constitution governing the group known by the acronym CAMCAICA, and all of Belize’s Mayors signed on.
Bradley says the formation of CAMCAICA represents a coming together of local bodies to discuss their common issues including taxation, economic development, tourism, crime and other social issues.
The municipalities will now work together to lobby the national leaders for more autonomy for their towns and cities to break all political gridlock and move them forward.
The Central American group is similar to the Caribbean and Commonwealth local government associations of which Belize is already an active part.
