By BBN Staff: A press release was issued today to inform that the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation will host a Shoreline Stabilization Workshop on November 8 at the Belize Airport Authority Conference Room as part of a technical cooperation agreement in support of the Sustainable Tourism Program II (STP II).
The main objective of STP II is to increase overnight visitor demand and expenditure in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner, through tourism product diversification, while promoting a systematic approach to disaster risk reduction considering climate change scenarios.
Natural capital is the foundation for future development of the Belizean tourism product.
However, studies show that the tourism sector of Belize is vulnerable to natural disasters and the impacts of climate change.
Corozal has been identified by the National Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan (ICZMP) as one of the most concentrated population centers along the coast and one of the areas with the highest vulnerability to flooding and erosion from storms and sea level rise and therefore recommends the incorporation of adaptation strategies in management planning in all coastal and marine areas in order to reduce this high vulnerability.
The aim of the technical cooperation is to mainstream disaster and climate resilience by conducting baseline studies to develop the design of shoreline stabilization measures for the tourist destination Corozal.
In this training workshop, the shoreline stabilization approach for the needed baseline studies will be discussed and training will be provided for ecosystem-based coastal resilience.
It will provide an opportunity to learn how to invest in a more resilient tourism sector in Belize using innovative and cost-effective technology that has the potential of being replicated in other areas of the country.
