By BBN Staff: House Speaker, Michael Peyrefitte, may have been vindicated by the Auditor General, Dorothy Bradley, during the first hearing of the Senate Select Committee yesterday.
In her special report into the passport, visa and nationality departments for the period 2011-2013, the Auditor General had ruled that Peyrefitte did not have the legal authority to sign and recommend an application for William Alden Lindo on May 30, 2013.
For this, Peyrefitte had filed a suit against the Auditor General and the Government of Belize sometime last month.
However, yesterday the Auditor General conceded that she had made an error and pointed to legislation which allowed Peyrefitte to make a recommendation although he was not a member of the House of Representatives but was instead selected to be the Speaker of the House.
“It is clear that Mr. Peyrefitte’s name should not have been included in the list at table ZK and was done so in error. Any inconvenience caused to Mr. Peyrefitte is regretted. Save and except for that error I stand by my report,” she said.
Peyrefitte told BBN, “It is indeed what I’ve been asking for from the very beginning and to hear her say it here today and to have it form a part of the record as the chairman said it exonerates me from what’s in the report and all I ever wanted was for my name to be cleared because I didn’t do anything I was not supposed to do.”
Peyrefitte is expected to withdraw his lawsuit, but it is not clear when he will do so.
