By BBN Staff: Reports reaching our newsroom are that 4 of Belize’s national birds are reportedly being kept in a cage in Harvest Caye for cruise passengers to view.
A source told BBN that there were reportedly five toucans on the Caye but one has died.
In Belize, it is illegal to keep the keel billed toucan in a cage.
A picture of one of the toucans caged up is currently being circulated on social media and many Belizeans are expressing their discontent.
Harvest Caye has been in the media for some time now after reports were being made that employees were not allowed to interact with tourists, and Belizeans are not allowed to visit the island.
BBN contacted Harvest Caye this morning and we were told that management is currently working a way for Belizeans to visit the island.
Asked about the toucans in a cage, a spokesperson told BBN that they do not have any toucans in a cage but what they do have is a walk through area in the island where cruise ship passengers can view Belize’s wildlife like butterflies.
