By BBN Staff: Standard five students from seven primary schools in the Cayo District are benefiting from the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program.

Today, two evaluators from the GREAT Program in the U.S. visited St. Andrew’s Anglican Primary School in San Ignacio Town to evaluate the initiative.

At St. Andrew’s Anglican, there are a total of fifty six students taking the program.

Jesse Castillo, a standard five teacher told BBN that during the course of the program, he has seen significant changes in students’ behaviour. Castillo said that the program is helping students to become positive thinkers and honest in the classroom.

He also said that the GREAT Program is really beneficial to the students because they are taught to be good citizens in their community and are encouraged to help others.

The seven schools presently involved in the training are: St. Andrew’s Anglican, Santa Elena Primary, Faith Nazarene, St. Hilda’s Anglican, Bullet Tree R.C., Bishop Martin R.C. and Santa Elena SDA.

The program is facilitated by Cpl. Ciriaco Medina of the community policing unit in San Ignacio.
