By BBN Staff: Since the beginning of the year Belize has been featured on several travel lists as a must-visit destination in 2017, now a new list of travel destinations published by the Gold Coast Bulletin features Belize but in less endearing terms. Gold Coast lists Belize as one of the top 10 poor countries that tourists won’t regret visiting.According to the article, “Holidaying in developing countries can often raise a complex set of questions and concerns – like, ‘Is tourism really helping the local people?’ or ‘Am I damaging the environment by visiting?’. It goes on to note that Ethical Traveler, an organization that researches policies and practices of developing nations, compiled the list using data from Amnesty International and the United Nations to determine the 10 most ethical destinations.
Gold Coast also sums up that the destinations featured on the list are making a big impression for all the right reasons. Belize is the first destination featured on the list. It highlights Belize’s Caribbean beaches, jungles, Mayan ruins, the barrier reef and the Great Blue Hole as obvious reasons to visit. The article also says Belize is a great destination for visitors on a budget, citing Lonely Planet’s recentl list which also featured Belize as a top value destination for 2017.
The article then says that Belize also earns recognition as an ethical destination for 2017 with several world-leading examples of sustainable tourism, along with new attitudes that saw the long-standing law criminalizing homosexuality overturned in 2016.
The list also features destinations including Cape Verde, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominica, Mongolia, Palau, Tonga, Uruguay and Vanuatu.
