Thursday, August 20, 2015. Aaron Humes Reporting: The question of when and how Belize will build its Forward Operating Base in the South continues to bedevil the Government.
As you heard Commander of the Belize Defense Force Brigadier General David Jones say during Wednesday’s press conference, there are logistical issues regarding the location of any base in the area, whether on Sarstoon Island or on the mainland, and that is factoring into their considerations.
But today Belize Territorial Volunteers leader Wil Maheia says they will lend a hand because the base is sorely needed. He says there is readily available material in Barranco village that can be used.
The VIP put together a petition asking that the Government commence immediate construction of the base. In the wake of Sunday’s events, that signature drive has gathered steam, as Paco Smith explains that from 98 signatures before the 16 August expedition, they have now gathered 427 signatures in all.
The VIP aims to reach 1,000 signatures in support of the petition.
