Tuesday, June 23, 2015. BMG: A malicious chopping incident in the Steadfast Village on Saturday left Ivan Turrijo, a Mexican student who was doing research in Belize, with grave wounds.
Authorities say Turrijo was a victim to a robbery as his laptop; cell phone and tablet were all stolen. Turrijo, who is currently doing research at the Billy Barquiedier Park, was approached by two robbers who took his valuables and then chopped him to his shoulder and the back of his head.
One of the victim’s finger was almost completely severed when he tried to grab the machete so as to stop the assault. He was rushed to the Southern Regional Hospital and was later transferred to the KHMH in Belize City.
As a result of this incident, police have detained two male suspects and recovered the stolen items with the aid of the suspects’ families.
One suspect was held down by his family until police arrived and the other was turned over to police by his family.
Police commends the families of these suspects.
