Radio pioneer Gerald Garbutt dies

Garbutt helped to found KREM Radio in 1989 and acted as its general manager in the early 1990’s, setting the template for its success in modern times.

He had previously worked with the old Broadcasting Corporation of Belize (BCB). He would later found and serve as general manager of FM 2000, the in-house arm of the People’s United Party (PUP), which eventually became Positive Vibes and is now Vibes Radio.

He is remembered by former colleague and current KREM Television manager Evan “Mose” Hyde as a competitive man who believed in being successful and professional.

Garbutt served as president of the Belize Cycling Association and founded the KREM New Year’s Day Cycling Classic. He is survived by family and many friends.
