Saturday, August 29th, 2015. BMG: Chikungunya or Chik V, as it is commonly called, is a vector borne disease that is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito and made its first appearance in Belize in November of last year, when a case was reported in the Las Flores area of Belmopan.aedes aegypti1 Corozal uncovers cases of Chikungunya

Chik V had seemingly disappeared since then; that was until yesterday, August 28, when a release from the Corozal Community Hospital announced that it was dealing with several cases of the deadly fever.

There are four suspected cases according to Kim Bautista of the Vector Control Unit (VCU), who said that all four persons are residents of the Altamira area of Corozal Town.

Bautista added that the VCU continues to investigate these cases as to ascertain whether they may be local cases or are from people who travelled outside the country and returned with the disease.

The Ministry of Health and the Corozal Town Council have teamed up to cleanup and destroy breeding sites of mosquitoes.
