Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015. BMG: Leader of the Belize Territorial Volunteers, William Maheia, accompanied by COLA’s Harley Burn, travelled to the Sarstoon Island once again yesterday morning, September 1, staying true to their commitment of visiting the area every Tuesday so as to monitor the movements of the BDF.
The trip was not without event, as Maheia and Burn reported that a small Guatemalan gunboat set chase after them in Belizean waters but was unable to run them down and gave up. They also reported that the BDF change-over, which happens on Tuesdays according to the Prime Minister, did not happen yesterday.
Harley Burn said that PM Barrow seems misinformed about what is happening in our country, since he told the public that a transfer of BDF soldiers from Cadenas happens on Tuesdays and no such transfer happened while they observed yesterday.
An explanation for that may be in General David Jones’ comments made at the Prime Minister’s press conference recently.
Jones said that the BDF’s routine would be changing constantly in an attempt to throw off observers such as the Guatemalan Navy, to whom the BDF’s movements had become predictable.
All in all, yesterday’s trip was successful in the eyes of the BTV and COLA but Wil Maheia says that to continue these weekly trips, the public’s assistance will be needed to afford fuel for the boat.
Maheia went on to say that an account exists at Belize Bank under the name, “Belize Territorial Volunteers”, to which any donations can be deposited and will be greatly appreciated.
