Opening the ceremony, Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle noted that he has never seen a Belize which was not independent as he was born a few months before Independence Day.

As a young person, he said, it would not do well to forget the sacrifices made by older generations to bring Belize to where it is today – a nation committed to development, confident in itself and competitive in the world.

Describing Belize’s journey as “colourful, with much progress but a few backward steps”, he urged the audience to avoid excess and remember that there is no agenda but the Belizean agenda.
